Service Learning

ED253, School and Society includes a service learning component.  Your service learning placement must be coordinated through the Center for Service and Social Action (CSSA). You will need to:

1) Complete an online Pre-Service Orientation and quiz available at www.jcu.edu/service/orientation (unless s/he has already attended a PSO),

2) Enroll as a service participant and register for a course-designated service activity through the Center’s website, and

3) Complete all scheduled service visits at their chosen site.(10-19 hours over the course of the semester).

This course requires a sustained, semester-long service commitment involving weekly participation.

Service activities are open for viewing ONLY beginning Monday, August 30th. Registration for service activities opens on Friday, September 3rd at 1:30pm and closes on Thursday, September 9th at 9:00pm.  Students are encouraged to attend the annual service and service learning fair on Friday, September 3rd between 11:30am-1:30pm in the Donahue Atrium to learn more about service opportunities. Service will begin on Monday, September 20th and run through Sunday, December 5th. Students must complete their entire commitment in order to receive credit for this activity.

Service learning is most effective when it involves multiple opportunities for learning and interaction over a period of time.

Additionally, community partners devote much time and effort toward developing quality service learning activities for students, and the partners depend on the regular attendance of all students who have registered for the activity. Consequently, students must follow through on the commitment they make to service and should complete ALL their scheduled service visits.  If a student must miss service, s/he should contact the Center for Service and Social Action at service@jcu.edu at least 24 hours in advance of their service, so that the center can inform the community partner of the student’s absence. “Make-up days” for students who miss service for any reason are NOT permitted, due to the constraints this would place on community partners. Students who have repeated absences or who do not comply with the JCU Student Code of Conduct or CSSA Service Placement Agreement may be removed from service at the discretion of the community partner in coordination with the CSSA office.
